In 2020, we were contacted by Sister Juliana, a Scalabrinian nun working in Ecuador at the border communities. Every day, migrants and asylum seekers fleeing the nearby Venezuela arrive, seeking safety for their families, often with very few resources to survive. In this challenging situation, and with the growing work demands, we decided to develop a joint volunteer project with the Scalabrinian Sisters to support the community.
The welcoming activities include migrant orientation, psychological support, placement in host families, especially for unaccompanied minors, training for these families, and ongoing monitoring visits to ensure the project is running smoothly. Often, young people cross the border seeking better life opportunities: for this reason, it is also important to develop an educational program that includes both recreational activities such as dance, sports, or art, and vocational courses that help the older ones enter the job market. Alongside these activities, awareness-raising efforts contribute to easing tensions in such a multicultural and socially unstable context.
