BURKINA FASO

We met Father Victor, a young priest from Burkina Faso, who, after a period of study in Italy, was about to begin his service in a parish in his home village. Through some AGAPE supporters from Sardinia, we got in touch with him: he wanted to return to his extremely poor village with a gift that would help improve the lives of families, and he understood that the most important gift was water.

The initial goal was to provide the population of this small village in the south of the country with access to clean drinking water all year round, where people could quench their thirst and freely draw water to irrigate their crops.

Thanks to strong motivation and the involvement of the entire community, the project expanded its goals to include some entrepreneurial initiatives and a new well to irrigate larger fields and start agricultural production with harvests throughout the year.

The context

Burkina Faso is an independent landlocked country in West Africa, slightly smaller than Italy, with a population of just over 21 million people, mostly concentrated in the central and southern parts of the country. It is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Life expectancy is just under 50 years, and the average age of the population is 17. Half of the population lives below the poverty line.

One of the main causes of the extreme poverty affecting the rural population in particular is the difficulty in ensuring access to water.
