Cremedoce de Fronteira

This social enterprise has a triple value: it allows young Mozambicans to learn a new trade, provides a nutritious product to the children of Ressano Garcia at a social price, and, due to its high profitability, helps create a fund for university scholarships for young people who wish to study.

How the project was born

The Scalabrinian Sisters, with whom AGAPE has been a partner since 2005, work daily to restore the dignity of migrant youth. The Scalabrini Center in Ressano Garcia cares for them when they arrive, often as minors and alone, in the city. Over more than a decade of working side by side, we have developed a different and innovative business idea: to open a solidarity ice cream shop, providing an opportunity each year for more young people to receive training in a high-quality job.

The context

Mozambique’s growth prospects are very positive despite the challenges of recent years. However, the country’s economic growth is not directly proportional to employment growth: in recent years, the number of graduates has increased significantly, as has the number of unemployed people. Every year, hundreds of young people from the southern provinces of Mozambique migrate to South Africa in search of work, but for many reasons, they often fail to cross the border and are left stranded in Ressano Garcia, a border city where they become victims of exploitation and violence.

The impact

TRAINING

Migrant youth arriving in Ressano Garcia almost never manage to finish their studies because they soon have to start taking care of themselves and their families, often forced to adapt to any kind of work—unofficial, poorly paid, and much more akin to exploitation. The ice cream workshop gives them a genuine work experience and teaches them skills they can use in the future.

NUTRITION

The ice cream is not only delicious but also a healthy and nutritious food for the children of Ressano Garcia, who are often victims of malnutrition. The presence of milk and eggs provides a good amount of protein, while milk also delivers essential minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins such as A and several from the B group. The sugars in the ice cream are all easily absorbed by our bodies and provide an immediate energy source.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The idea of financing a scholarship or vocational training fund with the surplus profits from the ice cream shop is directly linked to the project’s goal. Every year, more young people express the desire to attend university because, with the country’s rapid economic growth, they also want to improve their condition and that of their families. However, they often cannot afford the registration fees.
