A well for Kikwit

Since 2015, AGAPE has been collaborating with the Giosefiti friars of Kikwit, who manage several schools in the area, with over 3,000 children enrolled. After supporting them in the renovation of a social center, we have now partnered with them and the MONINGA association to construct a well to ensure access to clean drinking water for the children and their families.

How the project was born

The project was born from our ongoing relationship with Brother Kipoy, the General Superior of the Giosefiti, who has been a long-time friend of AGAPE. His report on the increasing health problems among the children pushed us to find a solution, involving MONINGA as well. They immediately offered their support, and together we began working to secure the necessary resources. Alongside us, the Congolese association Corpus Sana and Bambini nel Mondo have committed to setting up training and awareness programs for the children and the local population on hygiene and health.

THE CONTEXT

The available drinking water in Kikwit is insufficient to meet the needs of the population, which is also growing rapidly. In the Massamba neighborhood, in particular, there is no infrastructure to meet this demand. As a result, the population relies on water from local rivers, which are often contaminated with waste, bacteria, and chemicals, or from stagnant rainwater.

The Consequences of lack of clean drinking water

The population, in addition to suffering from the usual diseases caused by contaminated water, is developing increasingly severe kidney and gastrointestinal disorders. This forces families to travel many kilometers in search of clean water, which results in additional strain from carrying heavy loads under the scorching sun, especially for children, who are often tasked with this activity. Moreover, the search for water incurs significant economic and social costs: hours are spent gathering water, time that could otherwise be spent on work or study activities.

The impact

The project will provide direct benefits to the local population: the well will serve over 3,000 children and their families, around 500 people. Once this initial goal is achieved, efforts will be made to implement small agricultural projects (community gardens) using the water.
