Entendarte

Through a non-formal educational approach that involves the use of music therapy and art therapy, the project aims to stimulate learning processes in children and adolescents, improving memory, autonomy, expressive abilities, and spontaneity.

How the project was born

Entendarte was born in Mozambique as a natural continuation of the “Armoniosamente” project started by Antoniano in 2017. The results of the initial intervention far exceeded expectations, especially regarding the interest that music therapy, and art therapy in general, has generated within the communities, institutions, and the broader Mozambican public. The young people who were trained in music therapy and art therapy during the 18-month project were fascinated by the discipline and techniques and decided to continue studying it.

IN MOZAMBIQUE

The Entendarte project in Maputo is present in many different facilities thanks to the music therapists trained over the years and the volunteers, both from the Civil Service and others, who alternate every year, ensuring continuity of the project and gradually increasing the number of children and young people involved.

The Activities

TRAINING AND SUPERVISION IN MUSIC THERAPY AND ART THERAPY

First, the professionals from Antoniano and then international volunteers brought many different skills and disciplines to Mozambique, ranging from music and theater to art and even circus. The goal has always been to pass these on to local professionals so that they can increase their numbers and carry these practices forward independently.

MUSIC THERAPY, DRAMA THERAPY, AND ART THERAPY WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES

The activities are both preventive and therapeutic and are carried out by volunteers within the structures of our local partners, working with children and young people in small groups of 8-10 or individually. More and more institutions are asking us to collaborate, which is a sign that the results we are achieving are visible to the community.

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THE USE OF THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED

This theatrical method aims to provide tools for personal, social, and political change for all those who find themselves in situations of oppression. This tool is particularly effective for tackling issues that are often still taboo or difficult to address, such as early marriage, the role of women, or human trafficking.

IN INDIA

Since 2021, we have been funding a traditional Indian dance school for Dalit children and youth in Tamil Nadu. Culturally, the study of dance has long been reserved for the wealthier castes, making it impossible for children from lower castes to engage with this art form. Especially during the lockdown, we realized the immense importance of recreational and sports activities for the development and socialization of children and young people. The project has been warmly welcomed by the local population. Children and girls have been attending the center every Saturday for lessons, and the many photos full of smiles and joy that we have received testify to the success and impact of the project. It has provided a much-needed outlet for these children and youth, who had been left to their own devices for over a year.

The impact

The goal of the project is to complement formal education with non-formal activities that allow children and youth to develop and express their creativity and spontaneity, improve their self-confidence and relationship with the outside world, as well as provide the skills that facilitate self-expression and communication, while also stimulating the learning of reading and writing.

How to Take Part in the Project

MONEY OR MATERIAL DONATION

The project is well underway, but there's still a long way to go! We want to give the opportunity every year to more young music therapists and art therapists to attend high-quality training courses so they can become true professionals. You can also support us by donating to the project or sending useful materials for carrying out activities, such as musical instruments or art supplies.

INTERNSHIP OR VOLUNTEERING

We are always looking for professionals and students who are willing to donate some of their time, knowledge, and skills to help grow young art therapists. We are open to establishing agreements with universities, conservatories, and specialized courses, and we welcome interns during their internship period, coordinating the duration and activities together.

UNIVERSAL CIVIL SERVICE

If you are between 18 and 29 years old (not yet 30), you can apply for the Universal Civil Service program. The project offers the opportunity to spend 10 months abroad (+1 month of training in Italy), with all expenses for food, accommodation, flight, and documentation covered by the Ministry. Additionally, volunteers will receive an expense reimbursement. You can find all the information on the dedicated page of our website! CLICK HERE

ENTENDART DAYS

A series of events organized to support the ENTENDARTE project in Mozambique and India. Each event is dedicated to one of the nine arts, and with the help of our volunteers and some professionals who participate each time, we organize many themed workshops for children and entertainment for adults. Want to organize a cultural event in your city? We will provide all the support you need!
