AGAPE’s commitment in Mozambique began in 2000. At that time, we were working with the Scalabrinian Sisters in Brazil when we learned about a small mission run by their congregation in Ressano Garcia, Mozambique, at the border with South Africa. The trust we gained over the years working alongside them led us to conduct an initial visit: we found a frontier reality, a small mission of sisters with significant challenges. The Scalabrinian Sisters were caring for about 50 orphaned or abandoned children and were trying to provide food and medicine to the community of Ressano Garcia and the five nearby villages scattered across the savannah. They were also welcoming and assisting Mozambican migrants who had been forcefully deported by South African police. In these sisters, we found a reliable and capable partner, with a strong desire for growth and development, with whom we could collaborate to implement long-term projects and initiatives.
